Intergis Co., Ltd's (KRX:129260) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 33%
Intergis Co., Ltd (KRX:129260) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 33% share price jump in the last month. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 25% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 11x, you may still consider Intergis as an attractive investment with its 7.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, Intergis' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Intergis' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 36%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 50% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 34% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that Intergis' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Bottom Line On Intergis' P/E
Despite Intergis' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of Intergis revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
