We're Not Very Worried About Mobiis' (KOSDAQ:250060) Cash Burn Rate
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. By way of example, Mobiis (KOSDAQ:250060) has seen its share price rise 119% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Mobiis' cash burn is too risky. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Mobiis Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. When Mobiis last reported its September 2023 balance sheet in November 2023, it had zero debt and cash worth ₩29b. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through ₩2.8b. That means it had a cash runway of very many years as of September 2023. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Mobiis Growing?
Some investors might find it troubling that Mobiis is actually increasing its cash burn, which is up 37% in the last year. At least the revenue was up 8.1% during the period, even if it wasn't up by much. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how Mobiis is building its business over time.
How Easily Can Mobiis Raise Cash?
While Mobiis seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of ₩150b, Mobiis' ₩2.8b in cash burn equates to about 1.8% of its market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.
How Risky Is Mobiis' Cash Burn Situation?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Mobiis is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Although its increasing cash burn does give us reason for pause, the other metrics we discussed in this article form a positive picture overall. After taking into account the various metrics mentioned in this report, we're pretty comfortable with how the company is spending its cash, as it seems on track to meet its needs over the medium term.
