Here's Why I Think HANMI Semiconductor (KRX:042700) Is An Interesting Stock

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in HANMI Semiconductor (KRX:042700). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is HANMI Semiconductor Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years HANMI Semiconductor's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, HANMI Semiconductor's EPS shot from ₩384 to ₩1,004, over the last year. You don't see 161% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that HANMI Semiconductor is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 14.5 percentage points to 26%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are HANMI Semiconductor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that HANMI Semiconductor insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Indeed, with a collective holding of 55%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping ₩655b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!

Should You Add HANMI Semiconductor To Your Watchlist?

HANMI Semiconductor's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering HANMI Semiconductor for a spot on your watchlist. We should say that we've discovered 1 warning sign for HANMI Semiconductor that you should be aware of before investing here.
