UNISEM Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:036200) Stock is Soaring But Financials Seem Inconsistent: Will The Uptrend Continue?
Most readers would already be aware that UNISEM's (KOSDAQ:036200) stock increased significantly by 11% over the past week. But the company's key financial indicators appear to be differing across the board and that makes us question whether or not the company's current share price momentum can be maintained. Specifically, we decided to study UNISEM's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for UNISEM is:
7.9% = ₩17b ÷ ₩214b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every ₩1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₩0.08 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
UNISEM's Earnings Growth And 7.9% ROE
When you first look at it, UNISEM's ROE doesn't look that attractive. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 7.6%. Still, UNISEM has seen a flat net income growth over the past five years. Remember, the company's ROE is not particularly great to begin with. Hence, this provides some context to the flat earnings growth seen by the company.
As a next step, we compared UNISEM's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 23% in the same period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Has the market priced in the future outlook for A036200? Is UNISEM Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
UNISEM's low three-year median payout ratio of 15%, (meaning the company retains85% of profits) should mean that the company is retaining most of its earnings and consequently, should see higher growth than it has reported.
In addition, UNISEM has been paying dividends over a period of five years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is way more important to the management even if it comes at the cost of business growth. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company's future payout ratio is expected to drop to 9.6% over the next three years. The fact that the company's ROE is expected to rise to 13% over the same period is explained by the drop in the payout ratio.
Conclusion
Overall, we have mixed feelings about UNISEM. While the company does have a high rate of profit retention, its low rate of return is probably hampering its earnings growth. Having said that, looking at the current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings are expected to gain momentum.
