AUTO& Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:353590) Shares Climb 28% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Those holding AUTO& Inc. (KOSDAQ:353590) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 28% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 28% in the last twelve months.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking AUTO& is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.2x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Specialty Retail industry have P/S ratios below 0.5x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has AUTO& Performed Recently?
For example, consider that AUTO&'s financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as AUTO&'s is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 1.2% decrease to the company's top line. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 18% overall rise in revenue. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 20% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's alarming that AUTO&'s P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
The large bounce in AUTO&'s shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of AUTO& revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
