Does Eagon Industrial's (KRX:008250) Share Price Gain of 29% Match Its Business Performance?
We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Eagon Industrial Co., Ltd. (KRX:008250) share price is up 29% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. Having said that, the longer term returns aren't so impressive, with stock gaining just 4.4% in three years.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year Eagon Industrial grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.
When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).
Unfortunately Eagon Industrial's fell 4.8% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Eagon Industrial's TSR for the last year was 33%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Eagon Industrial's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 33%. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 3% over the last five years. We're pretty skeptical of turnaround stories, but it's good to see the recent share price recovery. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
