A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Shinsung Tongsang Co., Ltd.'s (KRX:005390) 25% Share Price Climb

Published
KOSE:A005390

The Shinsung Tongsang Co., Ltd. (KRX:005390) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 14% is also fairly reasonable.

Although its price has surged higher, Shinsung Tongsang may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.4x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 27x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

For instance, Shinsung Tongsang's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Shinsung Tongsang would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 29%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 274% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Shinsung Tongsang's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Key Takeaway

Even after such a strong price move, Shinsung Tongsang's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Shinsung Tongsang revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
