Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Hyundai (KRX:011760)
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So on that note, Hyundai (KRX:011760) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Hyundai:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.12 = ₩101b ÷ (₩2.3t - ₩1.5t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Thus, Hyundai has an ROCE of 12%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 8.1% generated by the Trade Distributors industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Hyundai Tell Us?
Hyundai is displaying some positive trends. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 12%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 119%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
Another thing to note, Hyundai has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 63%. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
Our Take On Hyundai's ROCE
All in all, it's terrific to see that Hyundai is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. Investors may not be impressed by the favorable underlying trends yet because over the last five years the stock has only returned 21% to shareholders. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
