The five-year returns have been impressive for Doosan (KRX:000150) shareholders despite underlying losses increasing
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Doosan Corporation (KRX:000150) which saw its share price drive 247% higher over five years. It's also good to see the share price up 54% over the last quarter.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Doosan investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

Given that Doosan didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
For the last half decade, Doosan can boast revenue growth at a rate of 5.9% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering the bottom line. So we wouldn't have expected to see the share price to have lifted 28% for each year during that time, but that's what happened. While we wouldn't be overly concerned, it might be worth checking whether you think the fundamental business gains really justify the share price action. Some might suggest that the sentiment around the stock is rather positive.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Doosan's TSR for the last 5 years was 287%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Doosan shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 172% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 31% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
