DN Automotive's (KRX:007340) earnings growth rate lags the 49% CAGR delivered to shareholders
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. To wit, the DN Automotive Corporation (KRX:007340) share price has soared 441% over five years. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It's also good to see the share price up 13% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 14% in the last three months.
In light of the stock dropping 8.1% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, DN Automotive achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 28% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 40% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for DN Automotive the TSR over the last 5 years was 644%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that DN Automotive has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 48% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 49% per year, is even more impressive. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that DN Automotive is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is potentially serious...
