What You Can Learn From Lasertec Corporation's (TSE:6920) P/E After Its 30% Share Price Crash
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Lasertec Corporation (TSE:6920) shares are down a considerable 30% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 42% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 13x, you may still consider Lasertec as a stock to avoid entirely with its 26.7x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been advantageous for Lasertec as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Lasertec's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Does Growth Match The High P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Lasertec would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 28% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 242% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 22% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 10% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Lasertec's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Lasertec's P/E
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Lasertec's very lofty P/E. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Lasertec maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Lasertec, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
