MEDIA DO's (TSE:3678) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
MEDIA DO Co., Ltd. (TSE:3678) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of May to ¥27.00. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.1%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

MEDIA DO Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. While MEDIA DO is not profitable, it is paying out less than 75% of its free cash flow, which means that there is plenty left over for reinvestment into the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to rise by 30.2%. While it is good to see income moving in the right direction, it still looks like the company won't achieve profitability. However, the positive cash flow ratio gives us some comfort about the sustainability of the dividend.
MEDIA DO Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 7 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was ¥8.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥27.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 17% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. MEDIA DO's earnings per share has shrunk at 12% a year over the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
MEDIA DO's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think MEDIA DO's payments are rock solid. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for MEDIA DO that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
