The board of JMS Co.,Ltd. (TSE:7702) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 26th of June, with investors receiving ¥8.50 per share. This means the annual payment is 3.6% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

JMSLtd's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, the company's dividend was much higher than its earnings. It will be difficult to sustain this level of payout so we wouldn't be confident about this continuing.

If the company can't turn things around, EPS could fall by 38.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 572%, which could put the dividend in jeopardy if the company's earnings don't improve.

JMSLtd Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥16.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥17.00. Dividend payments have been growing, but very slowly over the period. Although we can't deny that the dividend has been remarkably stable in the past, the growth has been pretty muted.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. JMSLtd's EPS has fallen by approximately 39% per year during the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

JMSLtd's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. We can't deny that the payments have been very stable, but we are a little bit worried about the very high payout ratio. We don't think JMSLtd is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
