Stock Analysis
Monex Group, Inc.'s (TSE:8698) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥25.10 on 2nd of June. This takes the dividend yield to 3.9%, which shareholders will be pleased with.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Monex Group's stock price has reduced by 33% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Monex Group's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Based on the last payment, earnings were actually smaller than the dividend, and the company was actually spending more cash than it was making. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 20.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues on its recent course, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 141%, which is a bit high and could start applying pressure to the balance sheet.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥18.00 total annually to ¥30.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 5.3% a year over that time. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.
Monex Group's Dividend Might Lack Growth
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Monex Group has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 56% per annum. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Monex Group will make a great income stock. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, Monex Group has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is concerning) we think you should know about. Is Monex Group not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
