Keihan Holdings' (TSE:9045) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Keihan Holdings Co., Ltd. (TSE:9045) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥97.00 on the 19th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 2.8%, which is above the industry average.
Keihan Holdings' Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Keihan Holdings' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 1.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 34%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥30.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥89.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. Keihan Holdings has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's encouraging to see that Keihan Holdings has been growing its earnings per share at 43% a year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
Our Thoughts On Keihan Holdings' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Keihan Holdings is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
