It's Down 25% But Suzuki Motor Corporation (TSE:7269) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

Published
TSE:7269

The Suzuki Motor Corporation (TSE:7269) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

Although its price has dipped substantially, Suzuki Motor's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.7x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 14x and even P/E's above 21x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Suzuki Motor has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Suzuki Motor?

Suzuki Motor's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 22% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 84% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 9.1% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 9.6% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Suzuki Motor's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

The softening of Suzuki Motor's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Suzuki Motor's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.
