Investors in Risanamento (BIT:RN) from three years ago are still down 76%, even after 11% gain this past week

Risanamento SpA (BIT:RN) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 50% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. In that time the share price has melted like a snowball in the desert, down 76%. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.

While the stock has risen 11% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Because Risanamento made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over three years, Risanamento grew revenue at 72% per year. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. So on the face of it we're really surprised to see the share price down 21% a year in the same time period. The share price makes us wonder if there is an issue with profitability. Ultimately, revenue growth doesn't amount to much if the business can't scale well. If the company is low on cash, it may have to raise capital soon.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Risanamento had a tough year, with a total loss of 11%, against a market gain of about 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Risanamento better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Risanamento you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable.
