Investors Give Seri Industrial S.p.A. (BIT:SERI) Shares A 27% Hiding
The Seri Industrial S.p.A. (BIT:SERI) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 23% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Seri Industrial's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Chemicals industry in Italy, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Seri Industrial Performed Recently?
Seri Industrial's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the mediocre revenue performance to persist, which has held the P/S ratio back. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this can at least be maintained so that you could pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Seri Industrial's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.7% last year. The latest three year period has also seen a 19% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 52% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 8.0%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's curious that Seri Industrial's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What Does Seri Industrial's P/S Mean For Investors?
Following Seri Industrial's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Looking at Seri Industrial's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
