Tinexta S.p.A.'s (BIT:TNXT) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 28% Share Price Bounce
Tinexta S.p.A. (BIT:TNXT) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 18% over that time.
Since its price has surged higher, Tinexta's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33.3x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Italy, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Tinexta's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
Tinexta's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's bottom line. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 17% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 26% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 20% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Tinexta's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Tinexta's P/E?
Shares in Tinexta have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Tinexta's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
