It's Down 27% But Birla Cable Limited (NSE:BIRLACABLE) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
The Birla Cable Limited (NSE:BIRLACABLE) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 74% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may consider Birla Cable as an attractive investment with its 19.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Earnings have risen firmly for Birla Cable recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Birla Cable, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
Birla Cable's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 8.0%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 1,589% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 24% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that Birla Cable is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Birla Cable's P/E
Birla Cable's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Birla Cable currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
