Some Vakrangee Limited (NSE:VAKRANGEE) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 53% Pounding
Vakrangee Limited (NSE:VAKRANGEE) shares have had a horrible month, losing 53% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 32% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, Vakrangee's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.8x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Multiline Retail industry in India, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 5.1x and even P/S below 1.7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Vakrangee's Recent Performance Look Like?
The revenue growth achieved at Vakrangee over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Vakrangee's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's top line. Still, revenue has fallen 63% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 9.3% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Vakrangee's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Final Word
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Vakrangee's very lofty P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Vakrangee revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
