Subdued Growth No Barrier To Jai Corp Limited (NSE:JAICORPLTD) With Shares Advancing 27%

Published
NSEI:JAICORPLTD

Jai Corp Limited (NSE:JAICORPLTD) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 11% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Jai is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 12.9x, considering almost half the companies in India's Packaging industry have P/S ratios below 1x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Jai's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Jai recently, which is not something to boast about. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the benign revenue growth will improve to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Jai, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Jai would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The lack of growth did nothing to help the company's aggregate three-year performance, which is an unsavory 21% drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 14% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Jai's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Jai's P/S Mean For Investors?

The strong share price surge has lead to Jai's P/S soaring as well. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Jai currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Jai, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
