Jyothy Labs (NSE:JYOTHYLAB) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ₹3.50
The board of Jyothy Labs Limited (NSE:JYOTHYLAB) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹3.50 on the 24th of August, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 0.8%, which is below the industry average.

Jyothy Labs' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. However, Jyothy Labs' earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 47.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 25%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₹1.25 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ₹3.50. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. Jyothy Labs has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Jyothy Labs has impressed us by growing EPS at 12% per year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.
We Really Like Jyothy Labs' Dividend
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
