Dhunseri Investments Limited (NSE:DHUNINV) Shares Fly 29% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
Despite an already strong run, Dhunseri Investments Limited (NSE:DHUNINV) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 147% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Dhunseri Investments may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.3x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 35x and even P/E's higher than 64x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
For instance, Dhunseri Investments' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Dhunseri Investments would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 68%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 63% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that Dhunseri Investments is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, Dhunseri Investments' P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Dhunseri Investments revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
