Avenue Supermarts (NSE:DMART) Hasn't Managed To Accelerate Its Returns
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. With that in mind, the ROCE of Avenue Supermarts (NSE:DMART) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Avenue Supermarts:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = ₹27b ÷ (₹155b - ₹12b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Thus, Avenue Supermarts has an ROCE of 19%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 9.2% generated by the Consumer Retailing industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 192% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 19%. Since 19% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
In Conclusion...
In the end, Avenue Supermarts has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 297% return they've received over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
