Subdued Growth No Barrier To V-Guard Industries Limited's (NSE:VGUARD) Price
V-Guard Industries Limited's (NSE:VGUARD) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 66.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 33x and even P/E's below 19x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Recent times have been advantageous for V-Guard Industries as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like V-Guard Industries' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 44% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 30% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 21% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 20% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that V-Guard Industries is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of V-Guard Industries' analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
