Why We're Not Concerned Yet About Suzlon Energy Limited's (NSE:SUZLON) 27% Share Price Plunge
The Suzlon Energy Limited (NSE:SUZLON) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 33%, which is great even in a bull market.
Even after such a large drop in price, Suzlon Energy's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 76.8x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 32x and even P/E's below 18x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Suzlon Energy certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Suzlon Energy's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 52%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 46% each year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 19% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Suzlon Energy is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Suzlon Energy's P/E?
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Suzlon Energy's very lofty P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Suzlon Energy maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
