Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Paramount Communications Limited (NSE:PARACABLES) Even After 25% Share Price Boost
Those holding Paramount Communications Limited (NSE:PARACABLES) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 2.4% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, Paramount Communications may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.5x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 34x and even P/E's higher than 64x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
The earnings growth achieved at Paramount Communications over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Paramount Communications' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 7.6% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 1,149% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it odd that Paramount Communications is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite Paramount Communications' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Paramount Communications currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Paramount Communications (at least 1 which doesn't sit too well with us), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
