Here's What's Concerning About Balkrishna Industries' (NSE:BALKRISIND) Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Balkrishna Industries (NSE:BALKRISIND) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Balkrishna Industries is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = ₹11b ÷ (₹123b - ₹33b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
So, Balkrishna Industries has an ROCE of 13%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 13%.

What Can We Tell From Balkrishna Industries' ROCE Trend?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Balkrishna Industries, we didn't gain much confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 18%, but since then they've fallen to 13%. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
In Conclusion...
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Balkrishna Industries is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 128% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
