Atlantic Grupa d.d (ZGSE:ATGR) Is Increasing Its Dividend To €1.50

Atlantic Grupa d.d. (ZGSE:ATGR) will increase its dividend on the 3rd of July to €1.50, which is 25% higher than last year's payment from the same period of €1.20. This will take the annual payment to 2.6% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Estimates Indicate Atlantic Grupa d.d's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, Atlantic Grupa d.d was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

EPS is set to fall by 15.3% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 117%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.342 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of €1.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13% a year over that time. Atlantic Grupa d.d has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though Atlantic Grupa d.d's EPS has declined at around 15% a year. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Atlantic Grupa d.d will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. To that end, Atlantic Grupa d.d has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
