If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Looking at Bortex Global (HKG:8118), it does have a high ROCE right now, but lets see how returns are trending.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Bortex Global:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.21 = HK$37m ÷ (HK$216m - HK$36m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2020).
So, Bortex Global has an ROCE of 21%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 8.7% earned by companies in a similar industry.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. So How Is Bortex Global's ROCE Trending?
In terms of Bortex Global's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. While it's comforting that the ROCE is high, five years ago it was 56%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a side note, Bortex Global has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 16% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Bortex Global is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. Furthermore the stock has climbed 55% over the last three years, it would appear that investors are upbeat about the future. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
