As you can see below, Braemar Shipping Services had UK£35.2m of debt at August 2020, down from UK£39.1m a year prior. However, it also had UK£12.7m in cash, and so its net debt is UK£22.5m.
How Healthy Is Braemar Shipping Services' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Braemar Shipping Services had liabilities of UK£82.7m due within a year, and liabilities of UK£19.3m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had UK£12.7m in cash and UK£33.7m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling UK£55.6m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of UK£65.3m. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry.
In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).
Braemar Shipping Services has net debt worth 1.6 times EBITDA, which isn't too much, but its interest cover looks a bit on the low side, with EBIT at only 6.2 times the interest expense. While these numbers do not alarm us, it's worth noting that the cost of the company's debt is having a real impact. Also good is that Braemar Shipping Services grew its EBIT at 15% over the last year, further increasing its ability to manage debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. This cold hard cash means it can reduce its debt when it wants to.

Braemar Shipping Services's EBIT growth rate was a real positive on this analysis, as was its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow. Having said that, its level of total liabilities somewhat sensitizes us to potential future risks to the balance sheet. It's also worth noting that Braemar Shipping Services is in the Infrastructure industry, which is often considered to be quite defensive. Considering this range of data points, we think Braemar Shipping Services is in a good position to manage its debt levels. Having said that, the load is sufficiently heavy that we would recommend any shareholders keep a close eye on it. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
