Here's Why We're Watching essensys' (LON:ESYS) Cash Burn Situation
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So, the natural question for essensys (LON:ESYS) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

How Long Is essensys' Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at July 2023, essensys had cash of UK£7.9m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through UK£14m. That means it had a cash runway of around 7 months as of July 2023. Importantly, the one analyst we see covering the stock thinks that essensys will reach cashflow breakeven in around 23 months. That means unless the company reduces its cash burn quickly, it may well look to raise more cash. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is essensys Growing?
Some investors might find it troubling that essensys is actually increasing its cash burn, which is up 15% in the last year. The revenue growth of 8.4% gives a ray of hope, at the very least. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
How Hard Would It Be For essensys To Raise More Cash For Growth?
Since essensys has been boosting its cash burn, the market will likely be considering how it can raise more cash if need be. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
essensys' cash burn of UK£14m is about 66% of its UK£22m market capitalisation. That's very high expenditure relative to the company's size, suggesting it is an extremely high risk stock.
Is essensys' Cash Burn A Worry?
Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought essensys' revenue growth was relatively promising. Shareholders can take heart from the fact that at least one analyst is forecasting it will reach breakeven. Looking at the factors mentioned in this short report, we do think that its cash burn is a bit risky, and it does make us slightly nervous about the stock. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for essensys (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
