We'd be surprised if Motorpoint Group Plc (LON:MOTR) shareholders haven't noticed that the CEO & Director, Mark Carpenter, recently sold UK£85k worth of stock at UK£0.85 per share. However, the silver lining is that the sale only reduced their total holding by 1.1%, so we're hesitant to read anything much into it, on its own.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Motorpoint Group

Notably, that recent sale by Mark Carpenter is the biggest insider sale of Motorpoint Group shares that we've seen in the last year. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of UK£0.82. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Insider Ownership Of Motorpoint Group

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Motorpoint Group insiders own 15% of the company, worth about UK£11m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Motorpoint Group Insiders?

The insider sales have outweighed the insider buying, at Motorpoint Group, in the last three months. Zooming out, the longer term picture doesn't give us much comfort. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying! In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Motorpoint Group. For example, Motorpoint Group has 3 warning signs (and 2 which make us uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
