Investors ignore increasing losses at MaxCyte (LON:MXCT) as stock jumps 10% this past week

When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. One great example is MaxCyte, Inc. (LON:MXCT) which saw its share price drive 175% higher over five years. And in the last week the share price has popped 10%.

Since it's been a strong week for MaxCyte shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

MaxCyte isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years MaxCyte saw its revenue grow at 17% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 22% per year, compound, during the period. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. To our minds that makes MaxCyte worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think MaxCyte will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

MaxCyte shareholders are up 11% for the year. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 22% over five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
