Mitie Group plc (LON:MTO) Looks Inexpensive But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.3x Mitie Group plc (LON:MTO) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 29x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Mitie Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Mitie Group's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 27%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 401% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 7.6% per annum as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 14% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Mitie Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Mitie Group's P/E
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Mitie Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
