Investors Who Bought Alpha MOS (EPA:ALM) Shares Three Years Ago Are Now Up 677%
Investing can be hard but the potential fo an individual stock to pay off big time inspires us. But when you hold the right stock for the right time period, the rewards can be truly huge. One such superstar is Alpha MOS SA (EPA:ALM), which saw its share price soar 677% in three years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 172% gain in the last three months.
Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.
Check out our latest analysis for Alpha MOS
Alpha MOS wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
In the last 3 years Alpha MOS saw its revenue shrink by 7.2% per year. This is in stark contrast to the strong share price growth of 98%, compound, per year. There can be no doubt this kind of decoupling of revenue growth and share price growth is unusual to see in loss making companies. At the risk of upsetting holders, this does suggest that hope for a better future is playing a significant role in the share price action.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Alpha MOS' share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Alpha MOS' TSR, at 696% is higher than its share price return of 677%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Alpha MOS shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 251% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 45%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
