Here's Why I Think Sartorius Stedim Biotech (EPA:DIM) Is An Interesting Stock

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Sartorius Stedim Biotech (EPA:DIM), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Sartorius Stedim Biotech Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Sartorius Stedim Biotech has grown EPS by 26% per year, compound, in the last three years. So it's not surprising to see the company trades on a very high multiple of (past) earnings.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Sartorius Stedim Biotech is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 4.2 percentage points to 31%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Sartorius Stedim Biotech Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations over €7.2b, like Sartorius Stedim Biotech, the median CEO pay is around €3.2m.

The Sartorius Stedim Biotech CEO received €2.0m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Sartorius Stedim Biotech Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Sartorius Stedim Biotech's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. With swiftly growing earnings, it probably has its best days ahead, and the modest CEO pay suggests the company is careful with cash. So I'd venture it may well deserve a spot on your watchlist, or even a little further research. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Sartorius Stedim Biotech you should be aware of.
