Investors Don't See Light At End Of Synergie SE's (EPA:SDG) Tunnel
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.8x Synergie SE (EPA:SDG) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in France have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 24x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Synergie over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Synergie's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 9.3%. Regardless, EPS has managed to lift by a handy 7.4% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 14% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we can see why Synergie is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Bottom Line On Synergie's P/E
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Synergie maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
