Stock Analysis
Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) shareholders have endured a 11% loss from investing in the stock three years ago
It can certainly be frustrating when a stock does not perform as hoped. But when the market is down, you're bound to have some losers. The Huhtamäki Oyj (HEL:HUH1V) is down 19% over three years, but the total shareholder return is -11% once you include the dividend. That's better than the market which declined 16% over the last three years.
So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Huhtamäki Oyj actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 9.9% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 6.9% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Huhtamäki Oyj further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Huhtamäki Oyj the TSR over the last 3 years was -11%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Huhtamäki Oyj has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 14% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 1.5% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Huhtamäki Oyj better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
