Investors more bullish on A.P. Møller - Mærsk (CPH:MAERSK B) this week as stock grows 3.7%, despite earnings trending downwards over past three years
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S (CPH:MAERSK B) share price has gained 30% in the last three months. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. In fact, the share price is down 41% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
A.P. Møller - Mærsk saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 31% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 16% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, A.P. Møller - Mærsk's TSR for the last 3 years was 0.1%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that A.P. Møller - Mærsk has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 30% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 17%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand A.P. Møller - Mærsk better, we need to consider many other factors.
