DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate (ETR:DMRE shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 10% this week, taking five-year losses to 81%
Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate AG (ETR:DMRE) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 86% in that time. And some of the more recent buyers are probably worried, too, with the stock falling 34% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 19% in the last three months. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last five years DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate saw its revenue shrink by 2.7% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price fall of 13% (per year, over five years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. That is not really what the successful investors we know aim for.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 81%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.
A Different Perspective
DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate shareholders are down 34% for the year, but the market itself is up 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 13% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are a bit concerning...
