Scout24 SE's (ETR:G24) Share Price Not Quite Adding Up
When close to half the companies in Germany have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider Scout24 SE (ETR:G24) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 26.7x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Scout24 has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Scout24's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 85%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 180% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 7.0% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 9.5% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's alarming that Scout24's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Scout24's P/E
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Scout24 currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
Having said that, be aware Scout24 is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
