The board of JOST Werke SE (ETR:JST) has announced that the dividend on 13th of May will be increased to €1.50, which will be 7.1% higher than last year's payment of €1.40 which covered the same period. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.9%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

JOST Werke's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. However, JOST Werke's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 47.1%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 33% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

JOST Werke's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

JOST Werke has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the annual payment back then was €0.50, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €1.40. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 19% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. JOST Werke hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years.

Our Thoughts On JOST Werke's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
