How Is ROE Calculated?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Shenzhen Aisidi is:

12% = CN¥769m ÷ CN¥6.6b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every CN¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of CN¥0.12.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

Shenzhen Aisidi's Earnings Growth And 12% ROE

To start with, Shenzhen Aisidi's ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 6.3%. Probably as a result of this, Shenzhen Aisidi was able to see an impressive net income growth of 23% over the last five years. However, there could also be other causes behind this growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Shenzhen Aisidi's growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 6.4% in the same period, which is great to see.

Is Shenzhen Aisidi Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
