Poly Developments and Holdings Group's (SHSE:600048) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock rises 6.1% this past week
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Poly Developments and Holdings Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600048) shareholders, since the share price is down 49% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 7.6%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 15% in the last 90 days.
While the stock has risen 6.1% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Poly Developments and Holdings Group saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 39% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 20% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Poly Developments and Holdings Group the TSR over the last 3 years was -43%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Poly Developments and Holdings Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 4.6% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 14%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 6% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
