For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. We regret to report that long term Daan Gene Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002030) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 59% in three years, versus a market decline of about 22%. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 45% lower in that time. Furthermore, it's down 17% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 8.8% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥449m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Daan Gene saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 18% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 26% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Daan Gene, it has a TSR of -48% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 17% in the twelve months, Daan Gene shareholders did even worse, losing 37% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 9%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Daan Gene better, we need to consider many other factors.
