Stock Analysis
Earnings growth of 8.8% over 3 years hasn't been enough to translate into positive returns for PKU HealthCareLtd (SZSE:000788) shareholders
One simple way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. In contrast individual stocks will provide a wide range of possible returns, and may fall short. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term PKU HealthCare Corp.,Ltd. (SZSE:000788) shareholders, since the share price is down 21% in the last three years, less than the market decline of around 20%. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 15% in a month. But this could be related to poor market conditions -- stocks are down 9.8% in the same time.
Since PKU HealthCareLtd has shed CN¥578m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, PKU HealthCareLtd actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 29% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.
The modest 1.8% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. The company has kept revenue pretty healthy over the last three years, so we doubt that explains the falling share price. We're not entirely sure why the share price is dropped, but it does seem likely investors have become less optimistic about the business.

A Different Perspective
PKU HealthCareLtd shareholders are down 14% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 6.6%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand PKU HealthCareLtd better, we need to consider many other factors.
