While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Jinyu Bio-technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600201) share price up 14% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 50% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Jinyu Bio-technology saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 15% per year, over the last three years. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 21% annual reduction in the share price. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

A Different Perspective

While it's certainly disappointing to see that Jinyu Bio-technology shares lost 4.4% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 10%. What is more upsetting is the 5% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. While the losses are slowing we doubt many shareholders are happy with the stock. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
