If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the long term shareholders of QITIAN Technology Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300061) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. So they might be feeling emotional about the 63% share price collapse, in that time. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 50% in the last year. Furthermore, it's down 23% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for QITIAN Technology Group isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

Because QITIAN Technology Group made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Over the last three years, QITIAN Technology Group's revenue dropped 12% per year. That is not a good result. With revenue in decline, and profit but a dream, we can understand why the share price has been declining at 18% per year. Having said that, if growth is coming in the future, now may be the low ebb for the company. We'd be pretty wary of this one until it makes a profit, because we don't specialize in finding turnaround situations.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 10% in the twelve months, QITIAN Technology Group shareholders did even worse, losing 50%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
